FAQ

Am I expected to attend every class on the schedule?

No, our instructors are students too so they understand if you cannot attend every single class. So don't feel bad if you miss a few classes because of midterms or assignments or anything else you're involved with. Of course, the more classes you attend the more prepared you'll be for grading and the more fun you'll have!

I missed the Try-It session, can I still join the club?

Yes, you can join the club at any time throughout the term.

What do I need for my first class?

For your first class you should bring a comfortable pair of clothing, a water bottle and your Watcard. Be ready for a fun workout and introduce yourself to one of the instructors so that they can welcome you.

Do I have to buy a uniform to participate?

A uniform (gi) is not necessary in order to learn karate. However, if you plan to continue with your training and progress through the ranks you will be required to purchase one. We sell uniforms and other equipment at the dojo.
How is Karate different from other martial arts like Tae Kwon Do or Judo?

The Karate we teach has a focus on blocks, strikes and body movement. Other martial arts focus on different aspects of hand to hand combat such as throws (judo) and joint manipulations and locks (ju jitsu). If you're interested in trying martial arts but you're not sure which one, then I suggest you attend a few classes of each. That way you can make an informed decision about which is right for you.

How is Goju Ryu Karate different from other styles of Karate?

"Goju" can be translated to "hard soft" and "ryu" into "style". So Goju Ryu Karate uses a combination of hard techniques such as striking and soft techniques such as blocking. Most styles of Karate have similar basics like punches, blocks, and stances but the main difference lies in the katas or patterns.

I've trained a different style of Karate, can I continue my training at this dojo?

Anyone with a background in martial arts is welcome to join our dojo. However, we do ask those with previous experience to begin their training with us as white belts. The instructors will assess an appropriate level for you within the guidelines of our style. We've had many students from different styles receive advanced gradings and some are even now instructors.

Do I have to be a University of Waterloo student to join this club?

Anyone with a Campus Recreation membership is allowed to join the club. Campus Recreation memberships are available for purchase by University of Waterloo alumni, staff, faculty and their spouses. Students enrolled in courses receive a free Campus Recreation membership, but those on co-op need to purchase one. Please visit the Campus Recreation website for more information on memberships.
